Statement of the Commission on Human Rights on the President’s commitment to bring justice to Kian Loyd delos Santos’s death
The Commission on Human Rights expresses its profound sympathies to the family, friends, and loved ones of Kian Loyd delos Santos.
At the same time, we welcome the President’s commitment in ensuring that the police officers responsible for the untimely death of Kian are held to account. We support the conduct of an impartial investigation that will truthfully determine the accountability of the police for any possible lapses or violations of human rights. Within full due process accorded to the accused, we welcome such statements from The President and The Philippine National Police’s Internal Affairs Service.
We hope that the President’s recent pronouncements at the heels of Kian’s killing will now put a stop to the practice of summary killings and bring back the government to respecting the rule of law in waging the campaign against drugs.
The Commission maintains the position that persons found to have committed crimes must be punished.
We are hopeful that the President’s call for accountability ignites action from heads of government agencies to bring to justice all perpetrators. Kian’s killing should serve as a signal to end the support for senseless killings as a result of police operations.
We call on the public to speak out, resist and never allow the culture of impunity to take root in communities and reign in our country. Let the principles of fairness, equality, and respect for human rights prevail as we work towards our collective aspiration of upholding the dignity of all. ■
